Garden Party.

11 Jul

I hope to have one.  In August.  If people will come.  But that’s not what this is about.  This is about our garden.

One of the first things Steve and I did after we moved in was plant a garden.  We were rather late in getting it in the ground, being that we didn’t move in until the end of May, but we it got planted nonetheless.

There was no vegetable garden prior to our putting on in so we had to pull up all the grass ourselves.  It was quite the project and took two days to get our 16 x 10 plot uncovered but we were at least able to use some of the sod in the front yard where we needed to fill in.

Unfortunately, about a week after we planted, we had two 100+ degree days in a row and a lot of what we originally planted got fried.  But, I replanted most things around June 7th and now everything is alive and growing, though a little small for this time of year.

Those pictures were from a few weeks ago.  I have since weeded the garden.  A few times.  And endured 29 mosquito bites.

Now it looks more like this:

It’s so exciting to have a garden.  We have beans, peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, zucchini, and sweet corn.  So far we’ve only been able to harvest the lettuce, which is quite bitter, but we’re still happy to have it.

Seeing my beans climb their poles makes me very happy.

Also, Steve told me that our crab apple tree is somehow sick and not going to drop apples.  I’m happy that I won’t have to pick up apples everyday to ensure our Reggie doesn’t eat them but sad that we might lose such a beautiful tree.
